Fiberglass, aluminum and even stainless steel will cause irreparable corrosion damage if the salt from salt water is left on your boat. Here in the great Pacific Northwest,
along with the
beauty of the San Juan Islands and Puget Sound, we have
corrosive salt water everywhere. It is virtually impossible to avoid saltiing your boat even if you haven't taken water over the deck.
If you do not take steps to remove the from salt salt water, the corrosion damage to your vessel will be significant. Many of us take the time to properly clean our vessels, but doing it correctly will certainly take up much of your valuable vacation time.
While most Northwest boaters are aware of the corrosive damage that salt inflicts on metals, it is not widely known that salt actually has negative effects on amlost every part of your boat that it comes in contact with. Salt from salt water left on your vessel can actually degrade your gelcoat, stainless steel railings and rigging and even damage winshield glass. Salt crystals are abrasive, acting
like sand paper on your gelcoat, and because salt is hydroscopic it is capable of condensing water out of the atmosphere when humidity is high. This turns to salt water, continuing the corrosive damage.
When washing down your vessel, it's best to use high pressure. Crevices in deck seems or window joints hold salt, and require high pressure to be completely rid of salt. Winches, radar scanners and other expensive components can also be damaged by the salt left behind after washing if high pressure is not used. Abrasive clensers can and detergents can cause damage to many of your boat's surfaces, and many deturgents are hazardous to the environement.
